Freddie Gibbs’s Album of the Year Tour is Coming to Houston

Written by on November 4, 2019

Freddie Gibbs has not had a cakewalk of a career by any means. After being dropped from Interscope in 2006, he joined Young Jeezy’s CTE World, only to leave in 2013 to form his own label. In 2016, his career came to a halt when he was held in Austria on sexual assault charges of which he was eventually acquitted of. Despite being active for over 15 years, he still doesn’t get quite the recognition that his talent deserves.

Freddie Gibbs is known for his serious subject matter and his street roots, with his solo albums all reflecting it. With widespread critical acclaim but lackluster fan support, Freddie Gibbs has historically had trouble with breaking into the mainstream.  In 2014, however, he collaborated with Madlib on Piñata, one of Hip Hop’s best producers. The album received fan support that finally matched the critical acclaim that his projects gained. Piñata perfectly blended Freddie Gibbs’s supreme lyricism with Madlib’s eclectic, often funky production. The album is laid back in the true essence of Madlib’s production, but still confronts the serious life experiences of Freddie Gibbs.

After Piñata, Freddie Gibbs released a few solo projects in addition to a collaborative album with Curren$ and The Alchemist. These projects, while still respectably creative and talent-driven, never measured up to Piñata. In 2016, Madlib announced that he and Freddie Gibbs were working on another project. He hinted that the project would include rejected beats from Kanye West‘s album, The Life of Pablo. The album, Bandana, was finally released in 2019. Many critics agree that Bandana actually outdid Piñata, despite doubts that Piñata could ever be topped.

Freddie Gibbs’s Album of The Year Tour will reach Houston on November 29th. He will perform at The Studio at Warehouse Live. You can get your tickets here.
