Tamaryn, Boy Friend, The Watermarks – 11/15 – Fitzgerald’s
Written by Coog Radio on November 13, 2012
Hot off the release of their follow-up to 2010’s The Waves, New Zealand born San Francisco based sky-gaze (yup, we’re going there) impresario Tamaryn will be gracing the Fitzgerald’s stage with songs from her new release Tender New Signs, which has more going for it than most albums released under any “INSERT HERE-gaze” genre.
Tamaryn’s sound definitely echoes the (at times near elephant-like) wailing guitars and soft vocals of My Bloody Valentine (as well as the moodier moments of Slowdive). But as gorgeous as that wall of sound is (and collaborator/producer Rex Shelverton is good on making guitars sound as tubey and gorgeous as possible), these elements only go so far without the melodically driven bass accentuated by powerful drums throughout. It’s the precision in their foundation that allows Tamaryn to not get lost in all the noise, it’s what gives their dreaminess lucidity.
Also on the bill is Austin synth-stress duo Boy Friend which Tamaryn featured in her AMAZING Dream Truancy Mix for Vice (highly recommended download) as well as Houston’s own answer to Jesus Mary Chain -The Watermarks.
