ALBUM REVIEW: Peso Pluma EXODO

Written by on July 5, 2024

After a few months of controversy, the Mexican artist Peso Pluma bounced back with his fourth studio album, Exodo. Releasing the record on June 20, 2024, he shocked fans with 24 tracks featuring other corridor artists such as Eslabon Armado, Ivan Cornejo, Junior H, and Natanael Cano. With over an hour of songs, ranging between trap and corrido, here are my favorites.

LA DURANGO

The record’s opening track features talents from Junior H and Eslabon Armado. With a symphony of brass and acoustic guitar as the opening hook, each member’s vocals layer brings lovely harmony. The song exemplifies the central theme of overcoming adversity with the opening line:

Después de tanto chin**** ya me superé

Y no me agüito, gracias a Dios estamos bien

After so much f***** over, I overcame

And I don’t feel bummed; thank God we are fine

La Durango by Peso Pluma, Junior H, and Eslabon Armado

LA PEOPLE II

A mention of the song, “La People“, from his previous album, GENESIS, Pluma, discusses narco culture. With features from Tito Double P and Joel De La P, Pluma depicts Mexican Narco life through an intense instrumental. It is a fan favorite due to its features and a demonstration of the new-wave genre of narcocorridos.

BELLAKEO

Originally released as a single in 2023, the song became a meme after Pluma’s intimate performance with feature artist Anitta. During the song chorus, Anitta did a small lap dance on Pluma, causing fans to be shocked at how close the pair danced, considering they had significant others watching live. Despite the scandal, the song, filled with reggaeton rhythms, remains a hit from the album.

RELOJ

With the talented vocalist Ivan Cornejo, the guitar riffs and somber tone illustrate the feeling of moving on from a past lover. The lyrics depict how one is reminiscent of their ex yet finds closure in the heartbreak. It’s a nice, calm track compared to the other on the record, balancing the long album’s pace.

BRUCE WAYNE

Pluma is no stranger to naming songs after pop icons; with the hit “LADY GAGA,” Pluma maintains the theme of resonating with American pop culture. As the song, BRUCE WAYNE, depicts a person who maintains a different identity at home and in the public eye, naming a song after Batman fully matches Pluma’s celebrity status. Not only does it have a catchy chorus, but it also has a theme of celebrity fame with the lyric:

Me siento Bruce Wayne porque en el Lambo ya me han visto

En las noches, como un vampiro

En las noches, como un vampiro”

I feel like Bruce Wayne because they’ve already seen me in the Lambo

At night, like a vampire

At night, like a vampire

BRUCE WAYNE by Peso Pluma

ROMPE LA DOMPE

Last but not least, this track has one of the most catchy lyrics of the whole record. The phrase “Rompe La Dompe” alludes to people breaking (rompe) a glass of Dom Pérignom (La Dompe), an expensive champagne brand. The song depicts a party of luxury filled with women and alcohol, basically celebrity fame and fortune, with a fun night. Along with features from Junior H to Oscar Maydon, the track remains my all-time favorite of the record.

Whether or not you are a fan of Peso Pluma, I recommend listening to this album along with his previous record, GENESIS. Both records showcase the peak of his career and musical talents. Furthermore, he will be on tour for EXODO, so the record and live show will bring mass success to the booming artist.
